SHI selects Scotland for wind farm

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) is making its first foray into the European wind energy market and has chosen the coastal town of Methil, in Fife, Scotland, as the location for its new seven megawatt turbine.

This £100 million investment will see a new wind turbine generator system tested at the Fife Energy Park and SHI said that its long-term aim is to establish a wind energy manufacturing base in Methil.

Insik Roh, chief executive officer of SHI, said: "We hope to contribute to the Scottish economy through successful testing and certification of our cutting edge offshore wind turbine and ultimately through establishment of our manufacturing facility here in Methil."

Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond said the investment shows that Scotland is becoming a European centre for renewable energy.

The expansion of wind energy projects is continuing apace in Scotland and the government has set a target for Scotland to generate 100 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
